Students can start the process any time but typically between Sophomore and Junior year of high school is best. Keep in mind that many selective colleges have early action deadlines, some as early as November of Senior year .

The best strategy is to apply to a range of colleges that best match the student’s interest. Be careful not to be too narrow in your options. There are a lot of great colleges of all sizes and settings. For example, don't discount small liberal arts colleges for fear of lack of social opportunities or large universities for fear of feeling anonymous - you may be surprised! Students who cast their net wide by applying to 8 to 10 schools typically yield the best results.

It is perfectly acceptable to be undecided about your college major at this time. Most students do not officially declare their major until sophomore year of college, leaving plenty of time to decide.
